Three candidates vie for two seats on Middleboro select board
MIDDLEBORO — A newcomer has thrown her hat into the race for select board, one of only two contested races in the Middleboro April 5 town election.
Sarah Alison Wilbur returned her nomination papers Friday, Feb. 14, which was the deadline. She is seeking a first term on the select board.
She joins incumbents Brian Giovanoni and William Pike in the race for two seats on the board.
The three will square off for a three-year seat.
Giovanoni has served on the Select Board since 2022. Before that, he served for nine years on the School Committee.
Pike is running again after being elected last spring for the one-year term remaining in the seat vacated by former select board member Arthur Battistini.
This time Pike is seeking a full three year term. He previously served on the Finance Committee.
At least one new face will join the Middleboro School Committee. Two seats are available.
With incumbent Marcy Fregault opting not to run again. Christopher Benson will be the sole sitting school committee member on the ballot.
He will be challenged by newcomers Shannon Marie Breen and Abbie Gonzalez.
Those will be the only contested positions in the town election.
The remaining positions are: Gas & Electric Commissioners, two seats. Daniel Farley and Thomas Edward Murphy, both incumbents, will be on the ballot. Adam Carbone, who is not currently on the board, took out nomination papers for the post but did not return them.
Incumbent Barbara Erickson is the sole candidate for the Board of Assessors.
Only one candidate, incumbent Robert Sullivan, is seeking a spot on the Finance Committee.
With two positions open, a write-in candidate, whether through an official write-in campaign or selected randomly by voters, will likely take the second spot, Middleboro Election Coordinator Laura Bamford said.
Anders Martenson IV is seeking re-election to the Planning Board for a five-year position.
A three-year seat on the Planning Board is being sought by Nancy Kefalis, who was recently appointed to fill the vacancy left by the retiring John Healey. She is the sole candidate for that spot. Tanya Lee Keegan took out nomination papers but did not return them.
William Ferdinand is seeking re-election to the Park Commissioners. He will run unopposed. Stephanie Jane Hewins took out nomination papers but did not return them. One position is open.
Thomas White is seeking a five-year seat on the Housing Authority. White, who is also on the select board, is running unopposed for the sole position.
