LAKEVILLE — The Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts recently announced a Lakeville scout has earned the highest award in Girl Scouting.

Abigail Young, a Lakeville resident, received the Girl Scout Gold Award during a ceremony in Waltham on May 18. She received the award for her medicinal and pollinator garden. Young designed the community project to increase pollinator insects, and grow historically medicinal plants to educate youth.

“I learned that I did have leadership skills and confidence deep within me that I didn't know of previously. This is definitely going to prepare me for the future, in which I will have a lifetime of needing to make personal decisions decisively and without insecurity,” wrote Young.

The project combined her interest in both pollinator gardens and medical herb gardens. She created a garden space at a local homestead education center that hosts classes and camps for youth, which implemented an educational aspect to her project, wrote Brenda Wheelock, the senior director of marketing at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts.

The Gold Award recognizes Girl Scouts in grades nine through 12 who take action to make a positive impact in their communities.
