Middleboro High’s Newcomb called spring’s top pitcher for Sox
MIDDLEBORO – Middleboro High graduate Sean Newcomb continues to put up hot numbers for the Red Sox in spring training in his bid to earn a spot on the squad this season.
Some baseball analysts have described him as the spring’s best pitcher.
Newcomb, 31, was invited to spring training camp as a non-roster player. He graduated from Middleboro High School in 2011 and was a first round major league baseball draft pick.
This spring he has pitched more than nine innings, more than any other hurler on the team in Grapefruit League play.
He has averaged more than one strikeout per inning with an earned run average of less than one.
Newcomb is a veteran major leaguer.
He has a 4.51 earned run average with 438 strikeouts in 175 major league games, including 60 starts. He has played with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 to 2022, Chicago Cubs in 2022 and the Oakland Athletics in 2023 to 2024.
Newcomb is no stranger to putting up strong numbers.
He had a .46 earned run average as a Middleboro High School senior. He notched 110 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched.
As a senior he helped lead the Sachems to a title by going 9-0 with three saves.
Newcomb was inducted into the Middleboro High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
In addition to his fans in Middleboro, Wareham residents are cheering him on as well. Newcomb pitched two seasons on the Cape for Wareham Gateman in 2012 and 2013.
