Lots to do in January at Lakeville Senior Center
LAKEVILLE — Lakeville Senior Center has a series of events scheduled in January and February. Here is a sampling:
Pop-Up Art School offers a chance to make a felt bird with a red accent, perched upon a real branch, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12.
Participants will learn the basics of how to needle felt merino wool and leave with the basic supplies and knowledge to needle felt. The program is free, thanks to a grant from the Lakeville Cultural Center. Call to sign up at 508-947-7224.
Winter Wellness with Essential Oils, to be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, will look at natural ways to boost the immune system, including the use of clove, cinnamon and the rind of citrus fruit. Cranberry Home Care and Continuum Hospice will sponsor an Alzheimer’s Awareness ice cream social to kick off the new year at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. January’s Senior Moment Social will feature ice cream sundaes and a virtual trip down memory lane to popular vacation spots, such as Walt Disney World or the Azores. Look to the night sky during Focus on Lakeville at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13. The program will show and discuss photos from NASA’s James Webb space telescope. Pat Monteith will host the presentation. She has served as a solar system ambassador and conducted programs for children and adults about NASA and various space science topics. Call 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up.
Registered dietitian Ashley Whewell will present Nutrition Simplified at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. This month’s topic will cover heart-related issues, including what foods to incorporate into one’s diet, how to lower cholesterol levels and how to make sustainable lifestyle changes in 2023. Join NaviCare Account Executive, Andrea Ferreira at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 to learn about Fallon Health's NaviCare® SCO and HMO SNP. Light refreshments will be served. Sign-ups are required. Free hearing screening, a free hearing aid cleaning, a free exam or free video will be provided during At Home Hearing Healthcare, from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 12. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 508-947-7224.
Brain Builders returns at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 and Tuesday, Feb. 21. Through education and practice, participants can learn tips and techniques to aid two common concerns of aging, memory loss and word-finding skills. Free manicures with hand and arm massages and polish applications will be offered by sophomores at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2. This is a chance for the students to practice and perfect their manicuring skills while working on communication skills and interacting with older adults in their community. This is done at no charge, but tips are welcomed and will go towards the cost of their licenses. Each manicure will take approximately half an hour. “The Holiday,’’ a movie about two women who swap homes at Christmas and find romance, will be shown at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10. “Shall We Dance,’’ featuring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, will be shown at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26. Admission is $2. Call to sign up at 508-947-7224.
An arts and crafts program to create valentine heart hangers will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18. Fee of $20 per person includes all supplies and instruction.
