Looking out for Lakeville: New director suggests new savings

Jan 18, 2024

LAKEVILLE — Lacey Marshall, the town of Lakeville’s new Human Resources director, presented a plan at the Jan. 17 Lakeville Select Board meeting to save the town “around $1,500 per year.”

Currently, the town’s employee handbook requires all new town employees to complete a medical examination performed by a doctor. In some cases, such as van drivers for the Lakeville Council on Aging, Marshall said that the medical examinations are necessary because of either regulations or the physically demanding nature of a particular job.

For many jobs, however, Marshall said that medical examinations were not actually necessary. Marshall specifically cited two part-time library clerks who the town had been hired recently. Marshall requested that the Select Board waive the medical examination requirement for the two library clerks, and that the board consider updating the employee handbook at a later meeting to modify the medical examination requirement so that examinations are only required when they are necessary.

The three Select Board members voted unanimously to waive the medical examination requirement for the two library aids. Select Board Chair Brian Day praised Marshall’s suggestion after the vote.

“Thank you, Lacey, for bringing this to our attention and saving the town some money in the future,” Day said.
