Leftover Styrofoam can be recycled at Middleboro nonprofit event
MIDDLEBORO — Bring Styrofoam from the holiday season to a recycling event in Middleboro.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, a Styrofoam collection event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Department of Public Works, located at 65 Sachem St. The collection aims to stop styrofoam from entering landfills so it can be recycled into products like surfboards, helmets, park benches, insulation, road beds, construction materials and more.
The collection event is cosponsored by the Sustainable Middleboro nonprofit and the First Unitarian Universalist Society’s Green Sanctuary Team.
A snow-date is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17.
“This time of year it’s almost impossible for households to avoid Styrofoam,” said Sandra Smiley in a press release, who serves on the leadership team of both Sustainable Middleboro and the church’s Green Sanctuary team.
“Anything fragile or perishable is shipped in it, and most of it gets thrown out after one use. By recycling Styrofoam into longer-use products, we can keep it out of our landfill, oceans, waterways, and roadsides — where it never breaks down,” she added.
On the Jan. 10 collection day, the DPW will accept polystyrene foam that “snaps.” That includes packing materials, foam peanuts, coolers, cups, meat trays, egg and takeout containers and other food cartons.
All Styrofoam must be clean and dry with no tape, labels, staples, cardboard, foil backing, or other material attached.
