Lakeville Senior Center to host an action-packed April

LAKEVILLE – The Council on Aging has a wide variety of activities planned to keep Lakeville residents busy this April.

On Thursday, April 25, the COA will be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a luncheon to celebrate COA volunteers, by invitation only. The luncheon will be at The Loon Pond Lodge. Boston Tavern will cater the meal. Musical entertainment will be The Steve Rudolph Trio. Invitations have gone out; RSVP by Tuesday, April 16. Any classes regularly scheduled at that time have been canceled that day. 

The Council on Aging Outreach Services are available to assist seniors and their families on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Some services available for referrals are fuel assistance, food bank, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, caregiver services and housing. Friday morning cafés are held from 9 to 11 a.m. Coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of snacks will be provided. No sign-ups are necessary and this is not restricted to Lakeville seniors. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only Tuesday, March 28 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Blood Pressure with Carol will be held in the craft room on Monday, April 8 & April 19 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. 

The Lakeville Fire Department will be at the COA on Friday, April 5 and Friday, April 9 during morning cafés to take blood pressure. No appointment is necessary.

The Parkinson’s Support Group will be meeting every first and third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the drop-in room.

The cosmetology students of Old Colony will offer free manicures on Thursday, April 4, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Students will offer a hand and arm massage as well as a polish application. Tips are welcome and will go towards the cost of their licenses. Sign-ups are required. Call the office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to schedule. 

The Book Club will be hosting their next meeting on Monday, April 8, at 1 p.m. Members will be reading “The Winemaker’s Wife” by Kristin Harmel. Sign-ups are not required. Walk-ins are welcome.

Learn about what to do in the case of a fire through the “Fire Safety for Seniors” program on Thursday, April 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. The program is intended to teach simple considerations to stay safe in the event of a fire. Fire Chief Mike O’Brien and Deputy Fire Chief Pam Garant will present the program. Sign-ups are required. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. 

A Home Hearing Health Care will be at the Lakeville COA on Thursday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A free hearing aid cleaning and/or free eye exam will be offered. Appointments are required. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

Brain Builders is back with a two-part series at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, and Tuesday, April 30. This is a community-based experience that enables attendees to enhance their brain fitness. Sign-ups are required. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

A Craft Day as well as a Paint Day with Amy will take place on Wednesday, April 17 at 10 a.m. Cost is $20 and includes all supplies. Sign-ups are required. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. 

On April 18 at 1 p.m. COA will have a class on how essential oils can help treat allergy symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose and stuffy sinuses. Sign-ups are required. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

Registered dietitian Ashley Whewell is holding a Nutrition Simplifies class Friday, April 19, at 1 p.m. She will be covering the topic of malnutrition. During this 1-hour class, she will discuss the causes and effects of being at nutritional risk, prevention and how a dietitian or MD may help if you are at risk. Treats will be served. The COA is hosting a “Fancy Foot Work” Falls Prevention Workshop on Monday, April 22 at 1 p.m. The workshop is designed to educate and equip individuals with practical strategies to reduce the risk of falls. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up.

Congregate meals will now be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m, on the following dates: April 1, 3, 8, 10, 17, 22, 24 and 29. Meals are prepared by OCES meal site coordinator Dawn Rivers. Payment is not required, although a suggested donation of $2.50 may be left. Sign-ups are required the week before. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. 

Line Dance Classes will now only be held on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The 1:30 p.m. class will not be continued. Sign-ups are required, but walk-ins are welcome. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. The cost is $2.00. 

The COA’s Mother’s Day Tea celebration will be held at Loon Pond Lodge on Thursday, May 9 at 12:00 p.m. Doors will open at 11:30. There will be several teas available, as well as coffee, finger sandwiches and pastries. We’ll welcome back Rita Parisi of “Waterfall productions” for a presentation on Victorian courtship. Hats, gloves, Victorian garb and audience participation are encouraged. Sign-ups for Lakeville Senior Ladies ONLY start Monday, April 8. Sign-ups open to all Senior Ladies on Thursday, April 18. Last day to sign-up is Thursday, May 2.  

Three movies will be showing during the month of April: “About My Father” on Tuesday, April 9 at 9 p.m, “Footloose” on Friday, April 12 at 1 p.m, and “Queen Bees” on Friday, May 3rd at 1 p.m. Admission is $2.00 per movie. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up. 

Men’s Social Group to be discontinued. After a year of trying, we’ve decided to dissolve the group. 

Come and shoot some pool on Thursdays at 10 a.m. Beginners, Intermediate and Experts are all welcome. We will play in the “drop-in” room. Sign-ups are not required but sign in at the kiosk when you arrive. If you do not have a kiosk card, come to the office. We will be closed on 4/25. 

Join us Monday, April 29 and make your own hand-made cards. You will take at least six cards home with you to send to your loved ones. Sign-ups are required and start April 1. Seating is limited. $10 per person due at sign-ups. 

The next Focus on Lakeville event will feature Lakeville native, teacher and author Richard Tripp. Tripp has put together stories on his teaching experiences, tales of learning pueblo pottery and Navajo tapestry weaving, anecdotes of his time living in a remote sheep camp behind the sacred mesa, then living in the pueblo itself, and his observations of tribal ceremonies. Join us at the COA as Richard highlights many of the experiences that appear in his book. Sign-ups begin immediately. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224. 

Thursday’s exercise class with Amy will now be called “Stretch and Strengthen” instead of “Yoga Stretch and Strengthen.” It will be the same class, with a new name.
