Home-grown Harvest Fair to return at Soule Homestead Education Center
MIDDLEBORO — The Soule Homestead Education Center will return Sept. 27 with the annual Harvest Fair to celebrate the beginning of fall, bringing fresh food and family-friendly activities.
The fair is set to bring activities, food and drinks, music, shopping and more to the homestead, located at 46 Soule St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Many of the activities will tie in to the homestead’s agricultural focus, including a cranberry bog exhibit, garlic planting, a horse show and a sheep dog demonstration.
The Middleboro Public Library will also attend the event to host a story walk for children through the homestead’s community gardens. Soule Homestead Director Kelly MacDonald Weeks said she works with the library to select each year’s book.
“Miss Amanda [Meyer] and I worked the last two years to pick a story that we feel like is a good reflection of the season, and then we put it in the community gardens,” she said ”It’s a nice way for people to visit, to explore the community gardens while also reading a story.”
This year’s book is “Harvest Days: Giving Thanks Around the World” by Kate DePalma.
Raffles and Soule merchandise will be available for purchase, with the funds raised supporting the preservation of Soule Homestead. Hot food will also be available to purchase, along with beer from locally-owned Harper Lane Brewery.
For the last few years, MacDonald Weeks has been incorporating food grown at the farm into what gets served at the fair. Last year, she used peaches to make a barbecue sauce, and she said she plans to use apples to make a similar sauce this year.
She also plans to use farm-grown tomatoes and peppers to make a gazpacho — a chilled vegetable soup — which she said “sounds weird but is actually amazing.”
Visitors can listen to live music throughout the day at homestead’s pavilion. This year’s performers will be Briana White, Renée Levesque, Lainey Dionne and Nate Ramos.
Presale tickets are available online now, with prices increasing at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the homestead’s website.
