Former select board member Evagelia Fabian now in the running for Lakeville’s select board race
LAKEVILLE — Voters now have a competitive Select Board race with former member Evagelia “Lia” Fabian entering the race in Lakeville’s town elections.
Shortly before the Friday deadline for town-election candidates to certify their election bids, Fabian threw her hat in the ring last week. Lakeville's Select Board race now has three candidates running for two seats.
Before Fabian pulled papers for the race, the two three-year termed seats were sought by incumbent Select Board Chair Maureen Candito and Kristen Howard, an at-large member of the Economic Development Committee.
All three are now vying for the seats. The candidates with the most votes will be elected to the board, and the board will be reorganized after the election. Candito’s term ends this year, and the other three-year seat has been vacant since Select Board Member Brian Day resigned in May.
Fabian served two terms on the board, including a term as chair, from 2019 to 2025. She has lived in Lakeville for more than 30 years.
Last year, she ran for reelection but could not garner enough votes to keep her seat. Current members Christopher Plonka and Paul Hunt beat Fabian by 142 and 60 votes respectively.
As a Select Board member, she has said her most proud accomplishments include changing the board’s name from Selectmen to Select Board, starting an annual breakfast tradition to honor veterans and developing the Lakeville Council on Aging’s food pantry which opened last year.
Across the other offices up for election this year, there is no competition. Other positions include seats on the Board of Assessors, Board of Health, the Park Commission and Library Board of Trustees.
The Lakeville Annual Town Elections take place April 6. The last day to register to vote for the election is March 27.
