Eating hot dogs, meeting cool dogs at True Value event

LAKEVILLE — Winberg’s True Value went to the dogs Saturday.

While hot dogs were grilling, cool dogs were chilling with visitors during the store’s annual fund-raiser for the Lakeville Animal Shelter.

All proceeds from a $5 hot dog lunch were donated to the shelter, which also had the chance to showcase two of its dogs available for adoption.

“We believe in dogs,’’ said store co-owner Jeff Baars.

The store is pet-friendly, with customers allowed to bring their pets while shopping rather than leave them in the car or outside the door, he said.

“We didn’t want that to happen,’’ he said.

As a result of the policy, Baars said, “we probably know the dogs better than the people.’’

During the event, a grill is raffled off, with all proceeds also going to the shelter.

The annual event raised $1,200 for the shelter, he said.

The money is used to defray the cost of medical treatment for the animals, said Lakeville Animal Control Officer David Frates.

The shelter currently houses 13 dogs in its 15 kennels, Frates said.
