Cruise, Elvis, magic among Lakeville Council on Aging activities

LAKEVILLE — The summer is here and there are plenty of activities available at the Lakeville Council on Aging, 1 Dear Crossing.

When the National Weather Service forecasts excessive heat and hot temperatures, the Lakeville Council on Aging will serve as a cooling center. The facility will only be opened for this purpose upon requests for assistance. To request assistance, call 508-947-4121. .

All aboard for a two-hour cruise around the world at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24. Visitors will “set sail’’ to France, Greece, Hawaii, Ireland, Italy and Mexico to learn about their cultures and sample some of their foods. Music and games will be part of the adventure. Wear your best “cruise’’ attire. Call ahead to register; this will take place at the center and not on water. 

The COA's Outreach Services are available to assist seniors and their families on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Outreach Services provide information and referrals to programs and services and/or assist in completing applications. Some services available for referrals include fuel assistance, food bank, SNAP (food assistance), caregiver services and housing. To contact COA Outreach, call 508-947-7224 and press 4. 

Friday COA Cafés are held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday mornings. The menu includes coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of goodies.  Attendance is not limited to Lakeville seniors; donations are accepted. 

State Sen. Michael Rodrigues will be hosting office hours from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26. Feel free to stop by with questions, comments, or concerns. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only Tuesday, July 25 from 10 to 11 a.m. 

Town Veterans' Agent Wilford Corey has office hours every Friday from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. He  can be reached at 508-946-8824 or to assist with any questions. 

“Elvis’’ will be in the building, in movie form, at least, at 1 p.m. Thursday July 20. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $2 and light snacks will be provided. 

The center’s creative writing group has come together to turn their life experiences into stories. They will share their stories at 10 am. Friday, July 21 and talk about what the writers’ group is about.

On Tuesday Aug. 8, at 1 p.m., hemp educator Lynne McCarthy will explain how CBD can be used in everyday life. There will be sips, samples and snacks available. Call to sign up at 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

Lyn Dillies, an illusionist who has entertained in Lincoln Center and Hollywood, will perform at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. Signups are required and $5 is due at time of signups.
