Cooler Middleboro Fair teaches about saving money, energy
MIDDLEBORO — The third annual Cooler Middleboro Fair will be even cooler than ever, organizers report, with a shark tank competition of student ideas for environmental projects and businesses, and student artists performing skits about sustainability.
The fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at the Middleboro High School Café Commons.
Families and children can walk inside Salt, the life-size inflatable humpback whale, make shark necklaces, plant seeds, and enjoy free crafts and games. School students, the 4H-Club, and youth groups will exhibit what they’re learning about the environment and sustainability.
For adults, the fair will be a one-stop opportunity to learn about insulation, heat pumps, hot water heaters, induction stoves, and solar panels as well as rebates, tax credits, and financing to help pay for them.
Local contractors, nonprofit organizations, and Middleboro Gas & Electric will be on hand to answer questions, help people sign up for energy audits and home estimates and demonstrate ways to save money on energy and make the community more sustainable.
“Families tell us they love seeing all the projects showcasing what the youth of Middleboro care about,” said Kimberly French of Sustainable Middleboro, one of the three local cosponsors. “At the same time they learned what they needed to complete home energy projects. Everything is free so parents and grandparents can keep an eye on youngsters while talking to contractors and learning about home energy savings.”
Local youth groups are welcome to exhibit what they’re learning about energy, biodiversity, or climate, and the environment. For more information, contact sustainablemiddleborough@gmail.com.
The fair is cosponsored by Sustainable Middleborough, the high school’s environmental YESS Club, and local nonprofit New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance, with funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and Cooler Communities.
