Charlotte (Sug) M. Sowyrda, 98
Charlotte (Sug) M. Sowyrda was born in Elmwood Place (Cincinnati), OH to parents John B. Kuderer and Dorothy Mae (Goddard) Kuderer, on October 11, 1925. Sug passed away on June 13, 2024 after (6) days at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth.
Sug was an only child but enjoyed a close relationship with her extended Ohio family and many friends. She graduated from Hartwell High School in Cincinnati and after graduation she worked for the American Can Company. She met Greg, her future husband, at an outdoor Memorial Day weekend dance at the beautiful Ault Park in Cincinnati. Greg was a mechanical engineer graduate from Bradley University and a WW II veteran, who was working in Cincinnati for General Electric. Reportedly, neither were good dancers.
After a brief courtship, Sug and Greg were married on April 18, 1953. She did say that Greg asking her to marry him shortly after they met was the only thing he ever did quickly. An apartment in Lynn, close to GE, was home before they bought their Peabody home. Oldest son John was born in October 1954 with Gary to follow in September 1956.
John and Gary’s childhood memories included Greg as a hard working GE engineer with Saturdays spent at his family homestead in Middleborough. And it was Sug who made sure the kids had their play time. Sug would drive them to all of their sporting events and practices, take them on an occasional trip to Fenway Park or the bowling alley, and once driving them by herself to Cincinnati for a summer visit with her family. The family enjoyed many New England and Canada camping trips, Father’s Day mountain hiking trips, and one epic five day wilderness canoe trip.
Sug took great pride in her home making, especially cooking for anyone who walked through her door, child rearing and her relationship with family, friends and neighbors. She volunteered for (15) years for North Shore Elders and a local hospital. Both enjoyed the outdoors, traveling with friends to Europe, an Alaskan cruise, visiting Gary and family in TX, and many car trips exploring the US and Canada.
Sug lost her soul mate to cancer in 2020 but continued to live her life while enjoying her family and Peabody friends.
In November, ‘23, Sug’s boys helped her purchase a new home in Hingham. This home was one story, on a dead-end street, and only three houses from John and his wife Mary. Nearby was grandson Greg and granddaughter Christine and their families. Sug moved out of her Peabody home of 69 years and into her new home in early January of this year, and loved everything about her new home.
Sug was survived by her immediate family: John & Mary Sowyrda (Hingham, MA), Gary & Susan Sowyrda (Houston, TX), six grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren in MA, TX, and CO. Greg was one of eight children, and is survived by his two younger sisters, and many nieces and nephews. Greg’s family has always been close to Sug and they remained so to the very end.
Family and friends are welcome to the visitation period at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Friday, June 21, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, with a funeral service starting at 11:00 AM.
Final Resting Place is the family plot at Nemasket Hill Cemetery in Middleborough, MA.
