Canines rock costumes at Ted Williams Park event

LAKEVILLE — Frankie the coon hound showed up dressed as the Pope with an impressive hat atop his friendly face.

Or maybe he was the Archbishop of Canterbury, his owner Matt Clement said with a laugh.

“Either/or,’’ he said.

Dogs showed their Halloween spirit by dressing in costume for the blessing of the pets and costume parade Saturday at Ted Williams Park.

The event featured raffles and concessions to benefit Lakeville Animal Shelter and Church of Our Savior.

Millie, a retriever/hound mix, dressed as a spider with dangling legs and the unmistakable oversized eyes.

While some dogs may bark at having to wear an outfit, Millie didn’t mind, her owner Karen Gordon said. “She’s pretty low-key,’’ she said. “She goes with the flow.’’

Yellow lab Stella sported a dozen doughnuts on her back.

Border collie Clover Gordon wore a rainbow to symbolize awareness and support for the LGBTQA community, her owner Kerri-Ann Gordon said.

In addition to dogs in costumes, visitors could participate in crafts. Hazel Leandres, 11, worked on painting miniature Halloween-themed decorations.

The dogs were a big draw for her, she said. “I want to be a service dog trainer,’’ she said of her future plans.

Maya, a Havenese owned by Kayla Bidlack, 13, and her family, wore a fussy dress and oversized glasses to represent an old lady.

The dog handled the costume for a while, but eventually started to tear it off and return to her normal identity.

“She’s not having it,’’ Kayla said.
