A burning success story: Fire department, students team up

Feb 11, 2023

MIDDLEBORO — A collaboration between the Middleboro Fire Department and Middleboro High School provides students with first-hand experience in the science of firefighting.

Students receive an inside glimpse into what it takes to be a firefighter as they report to the fire station every day for their internship. This opportunity allows students to see what it takes to be a firefighter as well as gain important skills that are needed to succeed.

Seniors have the opportunity to learn how to ascend through smoke-filled buildings, extract car crash victims, ice water rescue, and many other tactical skills.

Students develop teamwork skills and how to perform under pressure by experiencing real-world world scenarios alongside their peers.

The Middleboro Fire Department has gone on to hire many of the students that went through this program who then became full time firefighters for the town.

“Our schools are always trying to grow our experiential learning opportunities for students,’’ Superintendent of Schools Carolyn Lyons said. “This program was one of the pioneers for this initiative many years ago and we have seen this program continue to inspire students and give students a chance to work within their community”

Internship Coordinator Tammy Miller organizes the program.

“The Middleboro Fire Department and their talented and professional instructors are committed to the students and the success of the program,’’ she said. “Students leave the Fire Science Program not only with the understanding of what it takes to be a first responder, but also a better individual.”

Sign-up is open to all interested students. Due to limited numbers and safety issues, there is then a selection process to select the students that will complete the program.
