Beauty salon makes beautiful gift to food pantry
MIDDLEBORO — When customers leave New Concepts Hair Salon, they bring beauty to the world.
The same is true with a recent fund-raiser the salon hosted called Repurpose for a Purpose.
The event allowed customers to donate their old, unwanted jewelry to raise money for the Sacred Heart Food Pantry in Middleboro.
“Unwanted’’ did not translate to unappealing, salon owner Patty O’Brien said.
Attractive earrings, bracelets and watches were featured, with popular brand names including Lia Sophia and Alex and Ani.
“We had a nice variety of everything,’’ she said.
Rather than price out the jewelry, O’Brien accepted donations for each item purchased. Some donated a few dollars, others gave $20, she said.
The contributions added up. The eight-week event raised $1,000 for the pantry, which was O’Brien’s goal.
Although the pantry often receives food donations, money gifts are very important, said David Cunningham, who volunteers with the pantry.
Cash gifts, he said, help fill the pantry with items that might be lacking. If the pantry needs yogurts, for example, pantry supporters can use money to purchase those items.
Seeing support from the community, such as the jewelry sale, makes a difference, Cunningham said.
“It’s very important that people in the community know what’s going on and what’s needed,’’ he said.
O’Brien said she might do another similar effort in the spring.
