Lakeville brewery serving community in more ways than one

LAKEVILLE — The Red Hand Brewing Co. recently donated $1,000 to a Taunton-based food pantry which serves Lakeville and Middleboro residents.

The Red Hand Brewing Co., which opened last October, made the donation on Tuesday, July 22, to the Mathew Mission Food Pantry, a Taunton-based pantry that serves surrounding communities. The money will be used to buy groceries and toiletries that fill the volunteer-run pantry, which operates fully on cash and food donations.

During their eight months of business so far, the brewery chooses a different nonprofit about every month to donate a portion of their sales to.

“Sandy talked very highly of the food pantry. We thought [donating to] Lakeville, Middleboro and Taunton too, would be a good way to give back a little bit,” said co-owner Shawn Donnelly.

The family-owned brewery, located at 348 Bedford St., is fully owned and staffed by Lakeville residents. Every month they aim to give back to the Lakeville community. Since opening, the brewery has donated to Lakeville area baseball teams, dance teams and the Food Pantry Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Middleboro.

“We're growing the local support vibe, and it's been really positive,” Donnelly said.

Norm Grenier, director of the Mathew Mission Food Pantry and Lakeville resident, said it costs about $3,000 to stock the pantry for a single pantry day. Cash and food donations from businesses, residents and community organizations are the “life-blood” of the pantry.

The pantry operates out of the First Parish Church in Taunton at 76 Church Green, but serves eight surrounding communities that include Lakeville and Middleboro. The pantry is open once a month, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m on the second Saturday of the month. The next open day will be Aug. 9.

Grenier said the pantry averages about 125 clients during the two-hour window on their monthly pantry day.

Businesses like the brewery, individual donations and volunteers — including retirees and scouts of Taunton’s Scouting America Troop 40 — keep the pantry’s shelves stocked and lights running.

“We don't have any federal subsidy, no state subsidy, and we're not a member of the Greater Boston Food Bank. All of our stuff comes from private donations, and people say that looks impossible,” Grenier said.

“But, things look impossible till somebody does it — and we're doing it,” he added.
