Driver rescued with Jaws of Life after crash in Lakeville
LAKEVILLE – Firefighters armed with chainsaws and the Jaws of Life cut through brush and vegetation to rescue the driver of a heavily damaged car that crashed off Route 140 north in Lakeville on Tuesday, July 2.
The driver, the car’s only occupant, was rescued from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life, a hydraulic tool capable of ripping apart the frame of a vehicle, according to the Lakeville Fire Department.
The driver's identity is not yet known.
The driver was treated for serious injuries by fire fighters before they were transported to the St. Luke’s Hospital trauma center in New Bedford.
First responders arrived at the crash around 12:16 a.m., by 1 a.m. the driver arrived at the hospital.
A medical helicopter was enroute but due to the “quick work” of the firefighters, the helicopter was not needed and the driver was brought to the hospital in under 15 minutes, according to the fire department.
In the crash, a portion of the highway guardrail was pushed into the road. Fire fighters stayed at the scene of the crash to remove the guardrail.
Massachusetts State Police did not responded to a request for comment as of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9.
