Youth group steps up to the plate to help preserve bats
MIDDLEBORO — Conservation efforts to protect the endangered little brown bat in Massachusetts will be discussed at a program at 6 p.m. May 23 at the Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club, 92 Pine St., Middleboro.
The program is sponsored by the Wankinquoah Junior Associates. The goal of the organization is to foster a love and respect for the outdoors, teach skills to become responsible and ethical sportspeople and to provide growth and leadership opportunities.
The program’s speaker will be Jennifer Longsdorff, bat conservation program coordinator for the Natural Heritage Endangered Species Program at Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
She will also discuss all nine of the bat species found in Massachusetts, with a particular focus on the little brown bat population, which was especially impacted by White-nose Syndrome.
Members of the Wankinquoah Junior Associates have been busy building bat houses, which they sold for $40 each. Their efforts have raised $1,000 for the Natural Heritage Endangered Species Program at Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. The check will be presented at the May 23 event.
The event is free, but space is limited so those attending are asked to RSVP to wrgcevents@outlook.com. Sloppy Joes are available for dinner for $6.
