The Sachems took the win over Abington High School on Friday, Jan. 16, with a final 73-56 score, a product of the team’s building momentum Head Coach Alexandria Petit said. After some tough games earlier this season, the Sachems plan to keep the ball rolling in the win column.
“We got a big win. We needed that,” Sophomore forward Olivia Bourne said after the game.
Olivia said the team has been growing together through the wins and losses of the season, and Friday’s game was another addition to their growing momentum.
“I think that our practices have been adding up, and we've been playing really well together,” she said.
Petit said the team is working on their “holy trinity” strategy — defend, rebound and take care of the basketball. She said the team’s recent work to improve passing and being patient while on the offensive showed during Friday’s win.
She said although the squad continues to work on their fundamentals, chemistry comes second nature to this year’s players.
“They're building a lot of team chemistry. We don't run into any drama or problems in that sort of regard. They are all unselfish individuals,” Petit said. “They want the person right beside them to score more than themselves.”
“Those are the intangibles — that I don't have to teach — which makes this team so great,” she added.
The Sachems now stand at five wins and six losses.
Freshman point guard Lily Iwanski said the team had a rocky start to the season, but the family attitude and support from fellow players and coaching staff has kept spirits and scores high since then.
“We all play unselfish basketball, and we all help each other out,” Lily said.
Petit said the team will continue to focus on making daily improvements as they prepare for their next opponent in Cohasset High School on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
