Students read to kids, write new chapter in connections

MIDDLEBORO — Nichols Middle School students booked it to the Memorial Early Childhood Center Thursday, March 6 to share their love of reading.
Six students read to the prekindergarten and kindergarten youngsters at the center to celebrate Read Across America Week, an annual celebration held in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. Seuss to encourage a love for books.
Justin Dahlgren and Stephenie Kent read the book “Be You,’’ which celebrates individuality, inclusion and kindness.
When they finished reading, Dahlgren asked the children to rate the book on a scale of one to 10. That was too limited a scale for one youngster, who enthusiastically shouted “One trillion.’’
“I like kindergartners,’’ Kent said. “They’re cute and they can learn a lot from older kids.’’
Danica Powers and Juliyah Vilbrun read “Our Class is a Family,’’ which shared the message that a classroom serves as a family relationship. If you are kind, you will receive support from your classmates, even if you make a mistake, the book states.
Nichols students Sean Kennedy and Megan Riley also served as readers.
Some of the children dressed in their favorite literary characters, including 101 Dalmations, Spiderman and, fittingly enough, the Cat in the Hat.
The Nichols students added a new chapter to the school library. They donated the books they read, ensuring that the children can revisit the pages and messages of kindness they shared.
