Saving money and energy can be cool, Cooler Middleboro Fair promotes

MIDDLEBORO — Staying comfortable in all types of weather while saving money can be cool.

Bonus points for doing that while also protecting the environment.

That was the message at the Cooler Middleboro Fair, held Saturday, April 27 at Middleboro High School.

Sustainable Middleboro, an organization that aims to help moderate to low-income residents find ideas to save on energy costs, was a co-sponsor of the event, along with New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance and Middleboro High School’s Youth Environmental Social Society Club.

The fair combined activities aimed at children and educational displays for adults.

Kids could enjoy face painting, creating seed bombs that can literally bloom where they are planted, or even tossed, and the chance to step into Salt, a life-sized inflatable humpback whale.

Meanwhile adults could learn about businesses and organizations that promote energy savings.

“I like that it exposes kids to these topics at a young age and connects them to nature,’’ Middleboro resident Jennifer Carter said of the fair.

Kimberly French of Sustainable Middleboro said this year’s fair had more exhibitors than its debut event last year.

She was especially impressed with the work of the high school students who are working on projects to learn and teach about sustainability.

“Kids can teach the adults,’’ she said.

She hopes that activities such as the fair remind young people that the environment can be “a fun thing to learn about.’’
