Sachems softball makes championship game as other Middleboro, Apponequet sports seasons end
For the second consecutive year, the Middleboro High School Sachems softball team is heading to the state championship game.
The Sachems, ranked sixth in the tournament, beat Triton Regional High School 3-0 in the semifinals on June 13 thanks in part to a first-inning 2-run home run from senior Alex Welch plus quality pitching from senior Cassidy Machado.
Middleboro also beat third-seed Hudson High School 8-5 in the quarterfinals on June 9 and beat 22nd-seed Arlington Catholic High School 12-0 on June 7 in the round of 16.
At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Sachems will face the winner of ninth-ranked Bishop Fenwick High School and fourth-ranked Norton High School on June 14.
The date of the championship game is yet to be announced.
Other Middleboro and Apponequet Regional High School teams saw their seasons end in the playoffs.
The Apponequet Lakers softball team, the 12th seed, lost 5-2 to fourth-seeded Norton in the quarterfinals on June 10. Before that, the Lakers recorded an upset win over fifth-seeded Pittsfield High School 6-1 on June 7 in the round of 16.
