MIDDLEBORO -- The Old Colony Highlanders Pipe Band is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The band will mark a decade of music, friendship, and Celtic tradition with a special 10th Anniversary Ceilidh, a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering, Saturday, Aug. 15 from 5 to 10 p.m. at Harper Lane Brewery, 16 Wareham St., Middleboro.
The event will bring together current and former members, friends, supporters, and the community for an evening of music, dancing, and celebration.
The anniversary event marks ten years since the band was founded in 2016 by the current Pipe Major, Diane Wood-Bielski of Middleboro, with the support of her family of experienced bagpipers and drummers, their students and several colleagues from the pipe band community.
The band was formed with a vision of creating a pipe band dedicated to excellence in teaching, performance, competition, and community service throughout southeastern Massachusetts, a region that previously had no organized bagpipe band.
Old Colony Highlanders has grown into one of New England’s premier competition pipe bands.
The band has established a reputation for excellence by consistently ranking among the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association’s top-performing bands.
Today, the band includes musicians ranging from beginners to accomplished competitors, with members hailing from throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They rehearse each week in Lakeville.
Beyond competition, Old Colony Highlanders has become a familiar presence throughout New England, performing at Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day observances, graduations, civic ceremonies, festivals, parades, corporate events, and community celebrations.
The band is equally committed to preserving Scottish and Irish musical traditions through education, offering instruction in Great Highland bagpiping and pipe band snare, tenor, and bass drumming to students of all ages.
There is no admission charge, although donations to support the band are accepted. Band merchandise will also be available for purchase.
