Opinion: Heating costs may double, help is available

Sep 25, 2022

To the Editor:

Utility cost increases are in the headlines since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine destabilized energy markets, and the impact is particularly acute for New England’s upcoming winter.

Middleborough Gas & Electric Department isn’t immune to higher costs, and we’re announcing a significant increase in the purchased gas adjustment on Oct. 1 that will impact natural gas customers.

The good news for all customers is that electric rates aren’t changing, based on favorable purchases including hydro-power and nuclear energy to meet carbon-free goals.

The Oct. 1 gas rate increase is 57 percent over the current rate, but a heating customer could see winter costs nearly double, since last year’s rate was very low, from $160 per month to $314 per month.

In Southeast Massachusetts, gas supply options are limited. Middleborough Gas & Electric Department relies on pipeline vapor and trucked liquified natural gas to meet peak winter needs more than 12 times the gas consumed on a summer day. Both sources are priced at a premium.

To manage the impact, request a free energy audit to find ways to make your home or business more efficient. Lower the thermostat, add insulation upgrades and supplement with efficient electric heaters.

Middleborough Gas & Electric Department is diversifying our energy portfolios to support decarbonization goals for reliable, cost-effective supply. We’re grateful for the support of our customers.
