Longer Monday, half-day Friday schedule to continue for Middleboro Town Hall
MIDDLEBORO — The summer will last a little longer at Town Hall, at least in terms of scheduling.
Town Hall summer hours will continue through the next six months, with a longer day on Monday and a half day Fridays.
Traditionally, summer hours end on Labor Day. But select board members have agreed with Town Manager James McGrail’s idea to continue them for six months.
The hours will continue to be Monday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon.
The schedule “seems to be working well, from both residents and staff’’ perspectives, he said.
The additional hours on Monday to allow residents to access Town Hall outside of traditional working hours “seem to be a positive,’’ McGrail said.
And closing early Friday provides a “nice schedule’’ that gives the town a competitive edge when hiring employees, he said.
“Little things like that do make a difference when you’re trying to compete and attract help,’’ McGrail said.
The “optics’’ of a half-day on Friday might be a concern, Select Board Member Brian Giovanoni noted at the Aug. 21 Select Board meeting. But, he added, “I don’t think anyone has missed out on anything.’’
Select Board Member Neil Rosenthal questioned whether the later hours Monday would be as appealing in the winter, when the weather is cold and darkness sets in earlier than in the summer.
But he said he supports continuing the schedule and reviewing the situation in about six months.
McGrail said he is “open to the concept’’ of revisiting the schedule regularly rather than making a permanent commitment to the hours.
“I’d like to keep this a rolling conversation,’’ he said.
