Lakeville Senior Center announces activities for May and beyond

LAKEVILLE – Council on Aging is marching through May with a series of events and important announcements.

Outreach services are available to assist seniors and their families on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Outreach Services provide information and referrals to programs and services and/or assist in completing applications. Some services available for referrals are fuel assistance, food bank, SNAP, caregiver services, housing, and others. Congregate meals are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. Sign-ups are required the week before. This includes May 4, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25 and 30. There will be no congregate meal on May 9. Payment is not required, although a suggested donation of $2.50 may be left. 

The first gathering of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 5. This is a support group for grandparents who have stepped into the role of being a parent to their grandchildren on a full-time or part-time basis. Another meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on May 12.

The next book club meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 9 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., reading Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer. Light refreshments will be served. Newcomers are welcome.

A Grief/Loss Support Group is coming to the Lakeville Senior Center on Thursday, May 11 at 1 p.m. It will provide emotional support, validation, and education about grief and loss. Sign-ups are appreciated, and walk-ins are welcome. Call the COA office at 508-947-7224 to sign up.

On Thursday May 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. have a free hearing screening, a free hearing aid cleaning, or a free exam. Lauren Warburton, Hearing Instrument Specialist, will also be here on July 13. Appointments are required. Call 508-947-7224 and press 1.

The Lakeville Select Board hours will be held on Friday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Representative Norman Orrall will be there on Monday, May 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The COA will be hosting Friday morning cafés from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. No sign-ups are necessary. Coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of snacks will be provided. The cafés are not limited to Lakeville seniors. Money left in the café donations help to defray the cost of items offered.

On May 16 at 1 p.m. visit the COA to learn about simple, surefire, all-natural ways to help put a stop to those aggravating allergies. Learn about pure lavender oil, lemon oil, and more. Bask in 100% certified pure, therapeutic grade oils that can help with things like allergies, pain, sleep, and digestion. A "make and take" will be offered for you to bring home. The movie "Julie & Julia" will be shown on Tuesday, May 16 at 11 a.m. Admission is $2.00.

Have a paint day with Amy on Wednesday, May 17 at 10 a.m. Paint together step by step, “Colorful Garden Path” to celebrate the coming of Spring. Beginners welcome, no experience needed. Sign up today 508-947-7224, press 1. Cost is $20 per person, includes all supplies & instructions. 

Horseshoe pitching for Seniors will begin at Ted Williams Camp in Lakeville on Wednesday, May 17 at 2:30 p.m., and continue on Wednesdays throughout the summer, weather permitting. Open to all; no commitment, no cost, all abilities welcome. For more info call Debby at 774-240-0607.

The movie "Lee Daniels' THE BUTLER" will be shown on Thursday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $2.00.

During this month's Nutrition Simplified class on Friday, May 19 at 1 p.m., Ashley Whewell RD will discuss the importance of fluid intake, how much to consume each day, and strategies for increasing your intake. Class concludes with a delicious recipe for all to try. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only on Tuesday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

A Brain Builders event will be held on Tuesday, May 23 at 1 p.m. including activities to build conversation, word retrieval, and memory skills, which are vital for brain fitness. Light refreshments will be served; sign-ups are required. 

State Senator Michael Rodrigues will be hosting office hours on Wednesday, May 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Stop by with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Join for a presentation on Lifeline Medical Alert on Thursday, May 25 at 1 p.m. Sign-ups are required. 

The COA welcomes back NASA's Solar System Ambassador Pat Monteith on Friday, May 26 at 1 p.m. Monteith will lead you through the journeys of the pioneering women working behind the scenes as well as courageous female astronauts at NASA including women who are training to go on a three-year mission to Mars.

Join for bingo and lunch on Tuesday, May 30 at 12 p.m. Sign-ups for this months’ Bingo will begin May 1. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. and reservations are limited to 40. Pay $5.00 when you sign up. There are no refunds.

Van service is available for Lakeville seniors 60 years or older and those who are under 60, disabled & GATRA approved. Transportation is for appointments & shopping in Lakeville/Middleboro only. Medical transportation is priority. Grocery shopping is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. Once a month is a Walmart or Target trip. Transportation is available Monday through Friday approximately 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Vans are wheelchair accessible. Van rides must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

One way rides cost $1.75; round trip rides cost $3.50; and 10 rides can be purchased for $15.00.

The COA needs out-of-town medical drivers to drive seniors to nonemergency ‘well’ visits.

Out of town medical rides for Lakeville seniors 60 and over are available with at least one week notice. Seniors are set up with one of our volunteer drivers to transport them to their out-of-town medical appointments and are curb to curb pickup and drop off. These rides are not wheelchair accessible and are not always guaranteed. Please call the COA at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to schedule a Van or Medical ride.

On Thursday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. The Freetown, Lakeville, and Taunton “Sensational Seniors” will be performing several stories in the Lakeville Library Community Room. A game day is being hosted for Father’s Day on Thursday, June 22 at 11 a.m. Celebrate with a handful of activities, and food provided by the Lakeville Lions Club. They will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers, and side dishes. 

A "bar" will be set up for you to enjoy an ice cream float of your choosing: Root beer or orange soda along with peanuts and cracker jack. There will be outdoor cornhole and other games set up, and at 1:10 p.m. the Red Sox vs. Twins game will be on.
