Lakeville lunch fund-raiser goes to the dogs

LAKEVILLE — Dogs were everywhere Saturday Aug. 12 _ on the grill, attached to leashes and in people’s hearts _ when Winberg’s True Value hosted its annual Grilling for Dogs fund-raiser.

Hot dogs, soda and chips were sold for $5 _ with proceeds benefiting the Lakeville Animal Shelter.

Matt Pitts grabbed a quick lunch with Tom Fulton, both of Lakeville. “It’s a good time, good food and it’s for a good cause.’’

Four-year-old Walker Smith of Lakeville said he likes to “support the dogs.’’ He has his own dogs at home, he said, a Wheaton terrier named Beacon.

Fund-raisers such as Grilling for Dogs are “really important,’’ said Animal Control Officer David Frates. “That’s how we get the money to keep the dogs at the shelter until they are adopted.’’

There were no available dogs to be adopted Saturday but the event still served as a reminder to the public that the shelter takes in adoptable animals, said Kathy Seeley, Lakeville Assistant Animal Control Officer.

Prospective adopters left their information so they can be contacted when that perfect match pooch arrives. People also left donations, she said, of both money and items that the shelter needs.

Seeley brought along her four-month-old rescue, Lucy, whose easy-going personality that won over visitors.

“It’s been a very good day,’’ she said.
