James ‘Woody’ W. Murphy, 79
LAKEVILLE — James “Woody” W. Murphy, 79, of Lakeville passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of Cynthia A. (Donovan) Murphy.
Born in Fall River on November 9, 1943, he was the son of the late James J. Murphy and Helen R. (Burke) Murphy. After graduating from Somerset High School, Woody earned his Bachelor’s degree from St. Anselm College. He served in the United States Marine Corps, fought in the Vietnam War and after being discharged, he earned his master’s degree from Bridgewater State College.
Woody had a long career as a History teacher and coach of multiple sports. His passion was coaching and scouting football for over 52 years at Middleboro, Dartmouth, Wareham and ending at Bridgewater-Raynham.
With an avid interest in history, Woody enjoyed reading his history books, driving his truck “WOODEE” for scenic drives while stopping at his favorite restaurants, and especially loved watching his grandchildren play their sports.
In addition to his wife Cynthia, Woody is survived by his daughters Amy Murphy Kontos and her husband Edward, Nancy Murphy Jenkins and her husband Matthew and Anne-Marie Murphy Harden and her husband Jeffrey; his grandchildren Sophia Kontos, Brady Jenkins, Katie Kontos, Mary-Kelley Harden, Abby Jenkins, Maddy Kontos, Ellie-Anne Harden and Teaghan-Marie Harden; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Friday, July 21 for the repose of his soul at 10:00 AM in Sts. Martha and Mary Church, 354 Bedford St., Lakeville. Interment will be private. Calling hours were held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 17 Main St. (Rt.105), Lakeville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Woody's memory to the Veterans of Foreign War, Saint Vincent de Paul, or a charity of your choice.
