Disc golf planned fore Lakeville
LAKEVILLE -- A new golf course is coming to Lakeville.
But this one doesn’t require expensive equipment. In fact, clubs aren’t even needed.
“Your arm is your club,’’ said Bobby Drew.
Drew serves as the president of the Lakeville Disc Golf Association, a non-profit organization that is working to establish the Promised Land Disc Course at the Ted Williams Camp.
Disc golf players throw a specialized disc from a designated tee to a specific target. The aim is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws.
“Our goal is to create a welcoming destination that encourages people of all ages to get outside, be active, and enjoy one of the fastest-growing sports in the country,’’ he said.
The course would be open to the public and free to play.
The sport “lends itself well to newcomers and beginners,’’ he said.
Participation doesn’t require a lot of money, he said. “For 20 to 30 bucks, you can buy discs and have a great time.’’
Drew is looking for community support to boost the project. Volunteers are needed, he said, to help clear areas for the holes, among other tasks.
He is also seeking sponsors. A tree service company, for example, could donate their landscaping services in exchange for a sponsorship.
Plans are already in place for specific “holes,’’ which is the space from the tee, where players stand, and the metal basket where the discs are thrown.
The goal is to start each hole from the designated teepad and complete the hole once the disc rests in the basket, counting the amount of throws that takes as strokes.
Holes will range from par 3 to 5, which is the amount of throws it should take to complete the hole.
Drew hopes the course could open by October. Although his original goal was August, the project may need more time to get off the ground, he said.
But the new date also has promise, he said. “Fall disc golf is very nice as well,’’ he said.
