A bounty of fun: Elliot Farm Fall Festival draws a crowd

Oct 9, 2022

LAKEVILLE — Look up “fall festival must-haves’’ in the dictionary and the Elliot Farm Festival held Saturday featured pretty much everything on the list.

Live music was performed by ARLO. Children could meet alpacas and goats from Child’s Play Alpaca in Carver. Hay rides provided tours of the property. Visitors could pick their own pumpkins and sunflowers from the expansive gardens. Apple cider doughnuts, corn on the cob and local brews were on the menu.

That might explain the packed crowd at the event under bright autumn sunshine.

“We came to go pumpkin picking,’’ said Chelsea Crispino. “It’s Halloween, it’s the season.’’

The pumpkins were also a draw for Mariel Torren, who visited the fair with her daughter Ella, 6.

Their must-haves for the day: “Pumpkins to carve.’’

Corey Sylvia said he is a frequent visitor to the farmstand. “It’s beautiful here,’’ he said.

The farm has deep roots in town. For 28 years, Elliot Farm has provided produce to the community.

Founder Kenneth Elliot, 63, has been farming for more than 40 years, and welcomed his two children into the family business at the ripe ages of 9 and 8. Son Ken, and daughter Dee spent their summers picking zucchini and weeding rows of sunflowers, all before the morning dew had the chance to dry, according to the farm Web site.

In 2014, the siblings took over management of the farm.

The farm participates in community shared agriculture, also known as CSA. A group of farm stand customers pledge to support the farm by purchasing a “share” of the anticipated harvest before the season begins. The program helps the farmer with start-up costs, and saves the customer money in return, according to the farm Website.

Local families needing a helping hand also reap the benefits of the farm’s bounty. The farm teams up with Farm & Community Collaborative, to help provide the families with food.

That sense of community carried over into the festival.  All proceeds from the event were donated to local families in need.
