Apponequet, Middleboro spring sports enter the postseason
The Apponequet Regional High School Lakers and Middleboro High School Sachems spring sports teams have been competing in the playoffs.
Local track teams competed in the Meet of Champions on June 1 and 3 at Fitchburg State University.
Apponequet 11th-grader Morgan Hayward finished fifth in the state in the girls’ 400-meter dash. She finished sixth in the girls’ 400-meter hurdles.
Middleboro 11th-grader Isabel Wheeler finished fifth in the state in the girls’ long jump, while 10th-grader Jocelyn Bush finished 19th.
Wheeler and Middleboro 10th-grader Mia Lee-Bowens finished seventh and eighth respectively in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.
In the boys’ 1-mile run, Middleboro 10th-grader Lekan Sotonwa finished 27th.
Middleboro 9th-grader Atley Phinney finished 47th in the boys’ 800-meter run, the second-best result among freshmen.
The Lakers finished 20th out of 29 teams in the girls’ 4x100-meter relay, where four teammates each run 100 meters.
The sixth-seeded Lakers’ boys’ tennis team hosts Gloucester High School on June 7 in the round of 16. If Apponequet wins, they will face Dover-Sherborn High School on June 9 in a match hosted at Medway High School.
Apponequet’s girls’ lacrosse team, the eighth seed in the tournament, beat Malden Catholic 18-1 on Sunday, June 4, to advance to the round of 16. They will host Swampscott High School on June 7.
Apponequet’s boys’ lacrosse team, ranked 12th in the tournament, beat Fairhaven High School 12-4 on June 5, thanks in part to five goals from Kenny Wisniewski, according to Head Coach Jeremy Nodelman’s Twitter account. The Lakers will play an away game against Medfield High School in the round of 16 on June 8.
The Lakers’ softball team, the 12th seed, beat Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School 6-1 on June 5 in the round of 32. They will play fifth-seeded Pittsfield High School on June 7.
Middleboro’s softball team, ranked sixth, beat Hanover High School 8-2 on Monday, June 5. They will face Arlington Catholic on June 7.
Apponequet’s baseball team, ranked 18th in the tournament, won 10-0 against Sandwich High School in an away game on June 5. They will face second-seed Medfield High School in an away game June 8.
Middleboro’s baseball team, ranked 16th in the tournament, lost to Stoneham High School 7-4 on June 6.
The Sachems’ girls’ tennis team lost to Martha’s Vineyard High School May 31, ending their season in the round of 32.
Apponequet’s girls’ tennis team lost a close match to Pembroke High School May 31, ending their season in the round of 32.
Middleboro girls’ lacrosse lost 17-5 Notre Dame Worcester on June 5, ending their season in the round of 32.
Unless otherwise noted, all teams mentioned play in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Division 3. Divisions are broken down by the size of the school, and in the case of some private schools, based on their skill level in a particular sport. Track and field competitions are not divided into divisions.
