A Warmer Welcome: How a Simple Door Upgrade Made a Big Difference at Home

Oct 25, 2025

DARTMOUTH, MA — When Tom and Lisa from Dartmouth stepped through their old front door last winter, they could feel the chill creep in around the frame. “We knew something wasn’t right,” Tom said. “Even with the heat running, that entryway was always cold.”

By early September, they decided it was time for a change — and they called on Alton Barnes – Home Improvements to help. What started as a simple door replacement turned into a complete upgrade in comfort, efficiency, and design.

From Drafty to Dependable

The original doors, installed decades ago, had worn seals and no insulation. Each gust of wind found its way in, driving up heating costs and making the front hall uncomfortable.

“When I first looked at the doors, it was clear they weren’t doing the home any favors,” said Mack from Alton Barnes – Home Improvements. “The frame had shifted slightly, and there was no insulation at all around the jambs — just open air behind the trim.”

Over the course of two days, Mack removed both aging doors, installed the new homeowner-purchased models, and carefully insulated the surrounding frames to eliminate drafts. He also worked with the couple to refine the exterior trim design, creating a custom look that matched the home’s character while improving durability.

“The new trim really brought everything together,” Lisa shared. “Mack had great ideas that we hadn’t even considered — it looks beautiful and feels solid.”

Small Changes, Big Difference

Though the project took just a couple of days, the transformation was immediate. The entryway now holds warmth instead of losing it.

“It’s one of those things you don’t realize how much it matters until it’s fixed,” Tom said. “The whole front of the house feels cozier.”

As the cooler months approach, Mack says these types of upgrades make a big difference in a home’s comfort and energy performance.

“People think of big renovations first, but sometimes it’s the smaller, targeted fixes that really pay off — like sealing up drafts and adding insulation around doors and windows,” Mack explained.

A Season for Smart Upgrades

With fall in full swing, many Dartmouth homeowners — and others across the South Coast of Massachusetts — are looking for practical ways to prepare for winter. Door replacements, window upgrades, and sealing gaps can all improve energy efficiency and help reduce heating bills.

“Every home has its weak spots,” Mack said. “Addressing them before the cold sets in saves money — and makes your home feel better all season long.”
