Elizabeth Ann (Haynes) Smullen, lovingly referred to as “Betty”, 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at home.

She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Naughton) Haynes and the late Richard Haynes and was a former resident of Bethel, Connecticut.

She is survived by her devoted husband Francis Smullen, her brother Richard Haynes and wife Joan, her sister Irene Dailey and husband John, niece Chelsea Weiand and husband Michael, and her step children Kate Smullen Petersen, Moira Smullen Marshall, Patrick Smullen and Adam Smullen.

She attended Island Trees High School and was a graduate of Farmington College in Long Island N.Y.

Betty worked for Pan American Airlines, Matawan Regional High School, and was a long time employee of American Can /James River Company. After she retired she kept busy working as a caretaker for a property management company in Vermont, spent time at Curves for Women, worked at Macy’s, and volunteered at Little Britches Therapeutic Riding Program.

Betty loved to garden and was a fabulous cook. Some of her specialties included chicken and wine, strawberry rhubarb pie and her special cocktail meatballs! She collected Loons, penguins, and cracked glass. She loved browsing flea markets and shopping, specifically at the outlets. Betty enjoyed frequent vacations, especially cruises to Bermuda and the Bahamas. She loved to craft, sew, latch hook rugs, cross country ski, and bowling as well as listening to country music.

Betty enjoyed her later years in Massachusetts with her husband, Frank. Together they participated with the activities and goings on at their community and developed lasting friendships.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s name to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (MSPCA), located at 350 South Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.

Visiting hours on July 16, 2025 (Wednesday) from 4 until 6 p.m. in the O'Neill Funeral Home, 59 Peirce Street (corner of School Street) Middleboro.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 17, 2025 (Thursday) at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church of Saint Isidore Parish, 340 Center Street, Middleboro.

Cremation will follow.
