Middleboro standout pitches two scoreless innings for Red Sox

MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro High School graduate Sean Newcomb made his best pitch for a permanent position on the Red Sox roster with a commanding performance in the Grapefruit League.

Newcomb pitched two scoreless innings Tuesday, Feb. 25 when the Red Sox took on the Atlanta Braves in a spring training game.

He allowed one hit, with three strikeouts and no walks. 

Newcomb, 31, was invited to spring training camp as a non-roster player. He graduated from Middleboro High School in 2011 and was a first round major league baseball draft pick.

Newcomb has a 4.51 earned run average with 438 strikeouts in 175 major league games, including 60 starts. He has played with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 to 2022, Chicago Cubs in 2022 and the Oakland Athletics in 2023 to 2024.

He had a .46 earned run average as a Middleboro High School senior. He notched 110 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched.

As a senior he helped lead the Sachems to a title by going 9-0 with three saves.

Newcomb was inducted into the Middleboro High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. 

In addition to his fans in Middleboro, Wareham residents are cheering him on as well. Newcomb pitched two seasons on the Cape for Wareham Gateman in 2012 and 2013.
