Man receives serious burns after cooking incident in Lakeville

LAKEVILLE — Two people were injured, including one who was transported by helicopter with significant burns, after a cooking incident led to a flash fire Friday, Nov, 29, the Lakeville Fire Department reported.

Firefighters and EMS personnel received a report just after 2 p.m. of a fire at a single-family residence located on Woodland Ridge Drive. The 911 operator reported that the fire was extinguished but there were injuries at the scene, the department reported.

The incident occurred when the homeowners were serving a traditional Portuguese dish called Chouriço à Bombeiro, which translates to "firefighter's chourico" in English, fire officials said.

The dish involves the use of an open flame to cook the meat in a serving dish. As additional alcohol was being added to maintain the flame, a flash fire occurred, the department reported.

A gust of wind is reported to have come through an open window at this instant, causing the flash fire to spread about the kitchen.

A man and juvenile female received burns, officials said. Bystanders used towels, rugs, and blankets to smother the victims.

The man’s injuries were serious enough to request a medical helicopter to land at Ted Williams Camp. He was flown to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for what the department described as significant burns.

The female was transported by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital with burns that did not appear to be serious, according to fire officials.

Bystanders used a fire extinguisher to quell the remaining fire. Damage to the home was minimal and the family was not displaced.

The State Police Fire Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal's office responded to help investigate and document the scene.

Lakeville Fire Chief Mike O’Brien commended responders on their handling of the challenging situation. “Our firefighters and paramedics did an outstanding job of quickly and professionally managing the incident, providing advanced medical care to these victims,’’ he said. “Our thoughts are with the family tonight and we are hoping for a speedy recovery.”
