Home sought for dog with special needs rescued from Middleboro house
MIDDLEBORO — A six-year-old Shih Tzu mix with special needs who was rescued from unsanitary conditions in Middleboro needs a loving home, MSPCA-Angell officials are reporting.
The dog, who has been named Gumby, has fully luxated patellas, which means that his knee caps are permanently popped out.
“Gumby can’t bend his hind legs, which obviously impacts how he walks, but there’s unfortunately no surgical fix for his injuries,” explained MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection, Mike Keiley.
“Despite that, he’s still mobile and, given how friendly and spirited he is, we know that he’ll be able to live a happy life with adopters who are willing to help him navigate the world in his own special way,’’ Keiley said.
Gumby was one of 17 dogs found neglected and lacking food and water after a warrant was executed Oct. 18 at a home at 53 Precinct St. Two cats and a guinea pig were also located in the home.
Many of the dogs have since been transported to the Middleboro Animal Shelter, where they are soon expected to be available for adoption.
Kimberly Savino, 43, of Middleboro has been charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty, subsequent offense, in connection with the case. She pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court Dec. 10.
Anyone interested in adopting Gumby or any of the dogs available through the MSCPA should visit mspca.org/adoptadog for updates on their statuses and directions on how to adopt.
Keiley estimates the MSPCA-Angell will spend about $25,000 caring for the Middleboro animals. Those who would like to donate to help offset that cost are asked to do so at mspca.org/middle.
