MIDDLEBORO — Another day of Fourth of July weekend festivities ended with a bang Friday, July 5.

A fireworks display illuminated the sky over Battis Field, adding to the colorful Americana scene created by the ongoing carnival.

Many in the large crowd arrived prepared, armed with chairs and blankets, at least one fittingly adorned with an American flag.

Jaxon Burleigh, 4, of Middleboro, said he appreciated the “blasting off’’ of the fireworks.

Middleboro resident Riley Guerra, 12, catches the display every year. “They’re colorful,’’ she said. The chance to experience the rides and spend time with family makes the event special, family members chimed in.

For Rachael Conway, a Middleboro native who grew up near the field but now lives in Raynham, the carnival has been a long-standing tradition. In the early 1990s, when she was 6, she placed second in the traditional watermelon-eating contest.

With pride in her smile, she noted that the achievement landed her in the local newspaper.

Jacob Levesque, 9, said he liked “the sound of the fireworks.’’

“I just like seeing a good show,’’ he said.

But he couldn’t resist adding a comment that other early birds had made about the 10 p.m. start.

“I just wish it was earlier,’’ he said to the laughter of his family.
