Man charged with stabbing teens released on bail, with home confinement
WAREHAM — The 18-year-old Middleboro man charged with stabbing three teens, one critically, was released on $25,000 cash bail, with conditions that he be confined to home with GPS monitoring and was ordered to stay away from all victims and witnesses, Judge Julie Bernard ruled at a dangerousness hearing June 29 at Wareham District Court.
Bernard denied prosecutor Victoria Wood’s request that Jayden Wainwright remain in jail.
Wood argued that there was “clear and convincing evidence that [Wainwright] poses a danger to the public’’ and that no conditions beyond incarceration could ensure the safety of the community. She also described him as a “flight risk.’’
Wainwright is charged with stabbing two 19-year-old Carver men and a 15-year-old from Middleboro during what police described as a “pit party’’ in the area of the power lines on Wall Street in the early hours of Saturday, June 24.
He faces charges of attempted murder and three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Wainwright sat quietly as evidence was presented, at times looking upset and on the verge of tears.
One victim was “not doing well,’’ police said at the time of the incident, and was “in and out of consciousness.’’ He was transported to Boston Medical Center in critical condition. His current condition is unknown.
A second victim, another 19-year-old from Carver, was located nearby with numerous leg wounds and was to St. Luke’s Hospital. Police learned a third victim had been transported by private vehicle to Tobey Hospital with a stab wound to his leg.
In arguing that Wainwright should remain in jail, Wood showed the judge portions of a video interview Wainwright gave to police and videos taken by witnesses of the melee.
She said he was pictured making “stabbing motions’’ and heard telling police that he should have left the area. He also spoke of having “a rush of adrenaline.’’
The video showed a victim lying on the ground “unconscious and in a pool of blood.’’ During her description of the scene, a woman in attendance at court began crying and attempted to stand up from her seat in anger before being led out of the courtroom by others sitting near her.
Wood said the victim was “powerless’’ as “he was being held down and stabbed.’’
Police have said that about 60 people attended a gathering located about a quarter mile down an access road off Wall Street. A fight between two girls led to a brawl, police reports said. The incident was reported at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday, June 24.
Wainwright’s defense attorney, Michael Sheehan, argued that the video showed a scene of “complete chaos’’ and that the exact events are not clear.
“There were a lot of people with a lot of [items] in their hands and you can’t tell what they’re doing,’’ he said.
Sheehan argued that exactly who was stabbed, and who did the stabbing, remains uncertain. He said there was a “strong case for self-defense.’’
“My client was scared for his life,’’ he said. “My client was not out there looking to stab anyone that night.’’
Bernard acknowledged the case was serious but said that cash bail was “appropriate.’’
Wainwright’s next scheduled court date is July 21.
