Firefighter hurt, home destroyed in Lakeville blaze

LAKEVILLE — A Lakeville firefighter was transported to Morton Hospital in Taunton with minor injuries after fire destroyed a home Monday afternoon at 6 Beechtree Drive, the department reported.

As many as three people were in the home at the time of the fire but all got out safely, the department reported.

The fire was reported at 1:37 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames, the department reported, with flames threatening nearby homes.

After dousing the outside fire, firefighters tackled the interior. Their efforts were hampered by the large volume of household contents, the department reported.

At one point, conditions forced Fire Chief Michael O’Brien to order all firefighters out of the building. They then focused on keeping the fire from spreading to neighboring homes before they were able to reenter the building.

Officers were also forced to keep the peace multiple times throughout the incident, as occupants of the home became emotional, the department reported.

Water was used from Long Pond and from tankers from Lakeville, Middleboro, Freetown and Berkley fire departments.

Fire trucks, especially tankers, had difficulty maneuvering the narrow roads in the area, the department reported. This made the situation more difficult. Roads in the Huckleberry Shores and Robbins Lane area were closed for part of the incident.

Lakeville paramedics treated one occupant for a minor burn. The person refused transport to the hospital.

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Department assisted with scene documentation.

The fire was determined to be accidental and is believed to have started from the improper disposal of discarded smoking materials, according to the state Fire Marshal’s office.
