Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late Wille A. & Eloise Agnes (Coy) Shetler, Wayne grew up and attended public schools in Whitman, and was a graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, Class of 1968. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1969 during the Vietnam War; he completed basic military training and weapons mechanic courses.  For his outstanding efforts, Wayne earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He also earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1973. 

 

For many years, Wayne was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer. He worked the overnight shift at the Bridgewater State Hospital. In retirement, he liked the outdoors; doing yard work, gardening and mowing his lawn. With his late wife, Patricia, he would enjoy going to the various casinos and trying his luck, sometimes winning.

 

Wayne was the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Townes) Shetler; loving father of Michele Berge and her husband Steven of Middlefield, MA and Pamela Johnson of Middleboro; devoted grandfather of Zachary, Amber, Alexis and Allison; great-grandfather of Cole and Lexi; dear brother of Willis Shetler of Michigan, Eleanor Shetler of Idaho and the late Elwood Shetler. He is also survived by Scott Caramanica of Middleboro.

 

Funeral and Interment Services will be private.
