Window work continues as Assawompset readies for school opening
LAKEVILLE — By the first day of school Tuesday, Sept. 5, all first-floor classrooms at Assawompset Elementary School will have new windows installed, according to information provided Friday, Sept. 1 by Superintendent of Schools Alan Strauss and Assawompset Principal Bethany Pineault.
About 200 windows will be installed at the school by opening day, they said. The final full week before students enter the building has been a “very productive week,’’ the two wrote in a newsletter to the school community.
Questions had been raised by some residents, including select board members, about whether the school could open on time or if a back-up plan should be considered as the project continues.
School officials have consistently stated that enough of the work would be completed to allow school to open as scheduled. The project, which was approved by voters last November, was always slated to be completed after the school year starts.
Staff members set up classrooms late this week and are “extremely pleased with the new look,’’ according to Strauss and Pineault.
The window and door installation project is scheduled to be completed by mid-October, with the potential of finishing prior to that scheduled timeframe, they said.
Second floor windows will be installed after the school year starts, school officials have said, but any room without windows will have temporary ones put in.
Construction will move to a night schedule once school starts. Work will begin at 4 p.m. and no students will be in the building when workers are on site.
Before-school programming will continue at Assawompset. After-school programming will move to Austin Intermediate School, with transportation provided.
Other changes include the cancellation of the annual Popsicles on the Playground, due to “safety and logistical concerns,’’ Strauss and Pineault wrote.
The annual open house, traditionally held in September, will be scheduled instead for middle to late October, they wrote. The date and time have not yet been determined, they said.
New doors will be installed after the windows are completed.
