Apr 5, 2023

MIDDLEBORO — Spring brings the emergency of a variety of creatures. Some of them will make appearances in April at Middleboro Public Library programs.

More than 100 species of butterflies can be found in Massachusetts. At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, Plymouth County Extension Entomologist Educator Blake Dinius will discuss the experience of butterfly watching, how to get started and how to make a yard more attractive to butterflies, among other subjects related to the winged insects.

A less appealing creature, the tick, is also more prevalent in warmer weather.

At a program at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, Dinius will review science-based information to provide steps that can be taken to avoid tick-borne diseases He'll discuss the mysteries behind tick biology and ecology; the history of tick-borne disease in America from past to present; empowering protection methods; and anti-tick landscaping.

A program scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20 should be a real hoot.

Marcia and Mark Wilson will present Eyes on Owls, a program featuring six live owls, at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at Middleboro Town Hall. The program will be held on the lawn; in case of inclement weather, the presentation will take place in the Grand Ballroom.

For young audiences, the show starts with an interactive reading of a big book version of “Owl Babies.’’ After viewing the owls up close, everyone gets to practice the owls’ calls during lively hooting lessons.

The Wilsons will highlight the owls’ unique adaptations, habitats and behaviors in the wild, while sharing tips on how to find signs of owls.

Space is limited. Tickets for the program will be available beginning Tuesday, April 18 and must be picked up at the library. This program is supported by the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library.
