Stuff of nightmares: Dream exploration among Middleboro library happenings

Sep 30, 2022

MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro Library is sponsoring several events in the upcoming days and weeks.

A few spots are available for youth ages 10-18 to sign up for a two-hour basic wilderness survival program taking place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.

The program is aimed at those interested in learning some basic skills to help survive in the wilderness. Led by Matt Gabriel from Animal Man Survivor, participants will learn the construction of the warmest yet simplest shelter on the planet, the debris hut. They will also discover how to coal-burn a wood bowl, rock boil drinking water, soups and stews, and other skills.

Call the library at (508) 946-2470 to register.

A performance and educational demonstration on the kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa, will be presented by Sean Gaskell at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11.

He will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the kora’s musical repertoire.

Gaskell first heard the kora performed live in his hometown of Olympia, Wash. in 2006. That performance inspired him to immerse himself in the music of the kora and travel to its homeland in West Africa. He's presented programs for all ages at libraries, schools and assisted living facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Space is limited so call the library to register at (508) 946-2470.

A perennial Halloween favorite, paranormal guru Jeff Belanger,  returns to the library just in time for the holiday with a program about nightmares.

He will present his program, “Nightmares,’’ at 6:30 p.m. Thursday,  Oct. 27.

Based on his book, “The Nightmare Encyclopedia:Your Darkest Dreams Interpreted,’’ this program dives into sleep, dreams, and why people dream, then explores the most profound and memorable of all dreams: nightmares.

He'll explain the paranormal in sleep, what dreams mean, and the symbols and archetypes of the  dream world. The audience will have the chance to get some of their dreams interpreted.

Registration is required. Call (508) 946-2470 or email Reference Librarian Libby Fox at lfox@sailinc.org.
