Safety measures advocated at area where teen was fatally struck

The accident that resulted in the death of a Middleboro teen has renewed calls for a traffic light at the location.

Dylan Levesque, a 15-year-old Middleboro High School freshman, was struck by a vehicle as he crossed the street Sunday, May 14 on Route 28 near Hannaford Plaza. He succumbed to his injuries Tuesday, May 16.

Residents and town officials at the Select Board meeting the day after the accident described that area of Route 28 as especially dangerous.

Representatives from Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development have agreed to do a study of the area and evaluate potential improvements, Town Manager James McGrail said at the May 15 meeting.

The goal, he said, was to push the state to agree to a traffic signal in the area, which he described as a “high-traffic, high-concern’’ area.

The town lacks jurisdiction over the road, McGrail noted, because it is a state highway. Any changes to the location would have to be approved by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

He said he hoped that data collected by officials from Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development will help make the case to the state that a signal is needed.

“Our best bet is to arm ourselves with data,’’ he said.

Town resident Matthew Phillips said drivers often “come barreling’’ down the road as cars attempt to exit the Hannaford plaza. “Your head has to be on a swivel,’’ he said.

He described the area as “treacherous’’ for both “motorists and pedestrians alike.’’

Select Board member Brian Giovanoni noted that the area can be especially difficult to traverse because both the Hannaford plaza and the rear entrances to the Goode and Burkland Schools merge onto a busy road.
