MIDDLEBORO — True Grit Art Gallery, 38 Center St., will host an opening reception for “Land, Sea and  Sky,’’ a solo exhibition of new paintings by Marshfield artist Dorothy Pentheny, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.

An oil painter for almost 20 years, Pentheny has been exhibiting her paintings and selling her art work locally and throughout the country. Her paintings have been juried into numerous art shows. She has recently been the featured gallery artist at South Shore Art Center in Cohasset. Her work was awarded “Best Oil Painting” in the Hull Lifesaving Museum show and received an Honorable Mention from the Plymouth Art Guild.

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air” a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson serves as Pentheny’s inspiration.

“My paintings capture what we love about the land and sea around us,’’ she said. “The cool, deep woods, the vast ocean, and the open fields around New England are a refuge from the chaos of our lives. Being in nature brings us an escape, entertainment, and for some, a source of income.

The gallery invites the public to meet this local artist, view her works, and enjoy complimentary adult refreshments while socializing with other local art enthusiasts. This event is free and open to the public. “Land, Sea and  Sky’’ will be displayed through Sept. 30.

Regular gallery hours are Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
