The power of friendship: Middleboro utility workers help with hurricanes
MIDDLEBORO — Workers from Middleboro Gas & Electric traveled thousands of miles to provide support to residents in Georgia and Florida impacted by the recent hurricanes.
Line workers D.J. Shaw and Chris Navis traveled with a Middleboro Gas and Electric vehicle to Augusta. Ga. to help restore power and assist with other storm-related work after Hurricane Helene struck the area.
While they were there, Hurricane Milton struck Florida and assistance was needed in that state. The workers then traveled to Orlando to help.
Their efforts included restoring power to homes, setting up utility poles and clearing downed trees, Middleboro Gas and Electric General Manager Kenneth Stone said.
“We’re incredibly proud of the work they did,’’ Stone said.
The two workers stayed down South assisting crews for about two weeks.
Stone said he was especially pleased with their efforts, which he described as one of the “important benefits of mutual aid’’ provided among power companies.
“Sometimes we need help’’ from power companies out of the region, Stone said. The efforts down South was one way to return the favor, he noted.
