Pool at Battis Field nears opening

MIDDLEBORO — The public pool at Battis Field has been repaired and is now expected to open by Monday, July 7.

The Middleboro Town Pool at Battis Field, located at 26 Jackson St., has been under repair since last season due to damage on the pool’s lining. This week, the repairs have been finished, and the olympic-sized swimming pool will open during the usual first weeks of July.

Francis Cass, the Middleboro park superintendent, said the fiberglass lining of the pool is damaged from wear and tear and was in need of repair. Cass said the fiberglass repairs were the most affordable option, costing the town $18,000, but it requires a unique expertise.

“Fiberglass, which for pools, is like a VCR tape. It's not something that you buy today. Nobody really has it, but it is the most affordable. For example, a new liner would cost us over a million dollars,” Cass said.

Middleboro used emergency funds to make the repairs. Cass said they have an “optimistic” opening date of Saturday, July 5, but said regardless, the pool is expected to open by Monday, July 7.

Although it’s more affordable, especially compared to the million dollar repair-jobs that other nearby towns opt for, it does have its challenges, Cass said. The pool was built in 1934 and measures 50 by 175 feet, filling it requires 350,000 gallons of water.

“When you have the pressure of little funding in a pool built in 34’ this is what happens. The fiberglass liner is dissipating and it needs to be fixed. Getting somebody to [work] at this time of the year is always very, very difficult,” Cass said.

Now, after facing delays with rainy weather and securing the workers to do the repair — little is left to work on at the pool. Cass said the electrical system, built in 1984, that runs the water pumps still needs some tweaking after a recent lightning strike affected Battis Field’s whole electrical system.
