When it comes to making sliders, Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School Culinary Arts were second to only one.

The team placed second in the 4th Annual Vocational Slider Challenge, Superintendent-Director Alexandre Magalhaes, Principal Karen Guenette, and Culinary Arts Instructor Nuno Sousa reported.

On Tuesday, March 11, four Bristol-Plymouth Culinary Arts students traveled as a team to Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlboro to compete in the Slider Challenge.

 The team was composed of Grade 11 students Savannah Brangan of Middleboro and Julia Nunes, Kempton Pittsley, and Steven Roy, all of Taunton.

 Prior to the event, students collaborated with each other and Sousa to develop a recipe, hoping to win the trophy for a second time.

 Students prepared their condiments and ingredients before the event for maximum freshness and practiced the execution for a quick delivery of their slider. 

 In attendance were 135 locals, area chefs, public safety officials, and Assabet Valley staff, who each voted on their favorite slider. 

The B-P slider, the "Jalapeño Jack Burger," featured pepper jack cheese, fresh pickles, fried onion strings, tomato, microgreens, house-made jalapeno aioli, and house-made BBQ sauce. The creation earned the team second place. 

 "The impact of an event such as this one is that it really forces our students to think outside of the box, be willing to share ideas, and accept that theirs might not be what is chosen within their team," said Sousa. “But most importantly, it forces them to work as a team and have fun doing so."

 "We are lucky to be able to partner with fellow vocational schools like Assabet and participate in these events," said Magalhaes. "We are proud of our students for their creativity and collaboration, which allowed them to secure second place at the Slider Challenge. Congratulations!"
