Miriam Hobart weaves knitting, teaching passions at The Wool Patch
MIDDLEBORO — Like wool in a knit sweater, Miriam Hobart wove her passions together to create a yarn and woolen clothing store, The Wool Patch, which has a dedicated following.
What makes the store so special that knitting enthusiasts keep coming back?
According to customers, Hobart herself is the reason why — but she won’t tell you that.
“She is the best,” said customer Chris Puljanowski, who was attending a class at The Wool Patch. “There’s a lot of yarn stores around. They take your money, you’re there for an hour, and then you’re gone. [Hobart] is kind and generous and open-hearted, and she will help anyone.”
Hobart confirmed Puljanowski’s words.
“If you buy yarn here, I will always help you fix it,” Hobart said. “You can show up at any time. You don’t have to show up for a class or anything. I will help you fix it if you make a mistake.”
Whether you just bought your first set of knitting needles or you’re a veteran crafter, you will be welcomed to The Wool Patch.
The store, which has been running for 20 years, is located at 466 Wareham St. Her son fixed up the barn and transformed it from being used as a carport into a store full of yarn and knit clothing, with room for people to sit for classes and lessons.
Hobart said she opened the store because “I like people and I like to see them knit.”
Her classes consist of people sitting around a table in the store, knitting and chatting as Hobartprovides tips and fixes any mistakes.
After working on a now-defunct llama farm in East Bridgewater where she processed wool into yarn, Hobart fell in love with the craft.
When she began her first project, she said “I read the directions, and I made it!”
While Hobart herself took to knitting quickly, she realizes the mechanics of knitting and the need to count the number of stitches is hard for some people.
“You need to have a good time knitting, that’s the thing,” she said.
As her customers filed into the store for a class on Wednesday, April 5, the smiles and welcomes with which they greeted each other showed that Hobart has accomplished her goal when she established The Wool Patch.
“Not only is this the best shop, she is the best teacher,” Puljanowski said.
